Books – Find out 4 simple reasons to make them our best friend

‘What is your favourite pastime?’ I am sure all of us confronted this question at some point in our lives. Whenever anyone expressed such an interest in my hobby, I always answered in these two words – reading books. But why just reading a book can be someone’s only pastime? There are so many interesting and exciting activities that are waiting for me in this world. Then why do I prefer sitting in one corner of my home and spend my free time with some books? I have the option of going out, meeting new people and know the world in a better way. Well, the best explanation that I can give to this query is that :

*Reading a book gives me the same pleasure and happiness that others get when they go out, socialise with people and see the better side of the world. I never felt the need of finding a new friend when I had the best one with me throughout.

*I am an introvert to the core of my heart. So, reading assists me to infuse my mind with a world where I feel at home instantly. This is a feeling which only an introvert can understand.

Nobody forced me to opt reading as my pastime. When I was a kid, my grandmother used to tell me stories so that I could sit in one place thus helping her to keep an eye on me, while my mother was out for work. It was this habit of listening to epics and fairy tales that gradually grew my inclination towards books. When I was able to read on my own, books became my best friend. The friendship is going strong till date.

In my opinion, each one of us should give a try to the activity called ‘reading’ once. It shouldn’t be a hobby necessarily. Reading a book has undeniable and manifold benefits which one can realise only after doing it.

1. BOOKS LET OUR MINDS GET A MIRROR TO LOOK INTO :

Reading  helps us to do some introspection. Whether it is a biography, self-help, thriller or simply a light-hearted fiction, reading a book provides us some valuable lessons of life. We start to question our actions and be a good judge of our own character. In the long run, we see ourselves getting transformed into a new and even better human being.

2. SEE LIFE IN A GENEROUS MANNER WITH THE HELP OF BOOKS:

Our reasoning power, ability to question, discuss about our surroundings and knowledge – all these qualities are greatly enhanced by the habit of reading books. We go above the societal prejudices, unjustified norms and get a broader picture of life in front of our lives. Taking decisions on what we should or shouldn’t do in life becomes a bit easier for us.

3. BOOKS GIVE US A GOOD COMPANY IN OUR LONELINESS :

No matter how much high our social quotient is, there comes a time when we feel tired and alone. I mean we can’t tuck in someone (or let’s say our best friend) to be with our side all the time, be out 24 x 7 trying to find or do new excursions. What do we do then? There lies the importance of a book. It is always ready to shower it’s warmth on us with the kind and comforting words. Our exhaustion and loneliness fades away in the company of a good book while infusing us with the sheer joy of just being with it the way we are.

4. THE BEST WAY TO MEDITATE IS THROUGH BOOKS :

If the above stated reasons aren’t enough, then there is one more thing that books do to us. They have got the power to relax our minds. Try reading an interesting story when the mind is not in it’s best shape. After reading one or two pages, one is so involved with the story that the factors of stress and agony go missing. Moreover, our concentration level also gets a boost for our next set of activities. In short, reading is like doing mediation.

Books indeed play a significant role in our lives (only if we allow them to take that role). The fun part is, it does all the above good things to us unconsciously. It’s worth taking out some time and investing it with books. I am certain none will regret having Mr. Book as the best friend. Many more reasons to read a book may come out eventually.
