‘What is this childish behaviour, Renu?’ Mrs. Mihika Roy comes to her daughter’s room and finds her scribing something in organic chemistry book.
‘What childish behaviour?’ Renu asks as if she doesn’t have the slightest idea what her mother is talking about.
‘Don’t act smart. Why are you sitting here?’ Mihika’s eyes are filled with anger. Her younger sister, Anamika and her husband, Sailesh are back from their holiday in Australia and has brought gifts for Renu & Rohan. But her elder daughter left the room right in front of their eyes without even saying a ‘Hi’. What are they thinking?
‘Because I need to study,’ Renu replies coldly. ‘I have my chemistry class test tomorrow.’
‘But you were watching movie ten minutes earlier,’ Mihika crosses her hands and gives a sharp look.
‘Mom, what do you want?’ Renu gets restless now.
‘They are asking for you,Renu. Talking to your uncle and aunt for five minutes won’t hamper studies at all.’
‘Renu, they were away during the Durga Puja. You should at least seek Bijoya blessings from them.’
‘Mom, Bijoya is over. ‘
‘Is this the way a 17 year old girl should behave? It’s a very arrogant and childish behaviour,’ Mihika makes her eyes as large as possible, her usual body language whenever anyone disobeys her in the family.
Renu understands she can’t fight with her mother for long. She pushes the chair back with force and leaves her room. Rohan is looking delighted in his new GAP T-shirt. Sen family’s garment business in Kolkata has flourished ever since Sailesh took it’s charge five years ago. Four new garment stores in the city and an upcoming one in the heart of Mumbai has enabled him to afford a posh new apartment, holidays abroad, weekend getaways in five-star resorts and gift costly presents to relatives. No wonder, everyone respects Sailesh and Anamika for their friendly and fun loving nature.
‘Where did you go Renu?’ Anamika asks her niece with a bright smile. She smells lovely in her Channel perfume.
‘To hell,’ Renu wants to reply. However, she puts her furious mood in the sleeve of her smiley face and touches her aunt’s feet. ‘Shubho Bijoya, Maasi.’
‘Shubho Bijoya, dear. See if you like it,’ Anamika hands over a big packet to her. Renu is filled with unrequited disgust inside
and looks towards her uncle.
Sailesh is discussing GST with Rajdeep, Renu’s father but his eyes are on the movie Renu was watching earlier. The hero smooches his ladylove passionately to patch up with her. Sailesh changes the channel hurriedly.
Renu doesn’t understand Sailesh’s discomfort. He was very comfortable when he kissed 9 year old Renu. Renu’s parents were in office, the maid was out to bring back Rohan from school. Sailesh, who often visited the Roy household whenever he was in the area, utilised the opportunity to drag Renu to her parent’s bed and tried to push his tongue inside her mouth. Suddenly, the door bell rang and Sailesh sprung up from the bed. Renu could not make out what he just did to her but could realise something wrong had happened.
Few months later, the two families went for a trip to Digha. Due to the peak season, they could manage only one bedroom in the hotel. Anamika, her 7 year old daughter Sana, Renu and Mihika slept on the floor. Rajdeep, Rohan and Sailesh were sleeping in the bed. Half past midnight, Renu felt two hands on her body. At first, Renu thought it must be Sana who had bad sleeping patterns. But gradually, those two strong hands started hugging her body tightly and Renu felt a warm breath on her shoulders. She had never experienced such rotten touch in her life before.
A faint scream escaped her mouth in fear. She saw a shadow jumping up from her side and lying down next to her father in bed. Rajdeep might had heard her scream and asked, ‘What happened Renu?’ Renu didn’t know how to tell her father what happened that night.
Sailesh had tried to touch her years later even after that night. But Renu doesn’t know how to unmask this man till date. She feels disgusted about her ownself when Renu watches Sailesh and his wife sipping tea happily inside her home.
‘Shubho Bijoya,’ Renu touches Sailesh’s feet lightly.
‘God bless you, Renu. How have you been?’ Sailesh gives away his usual gentleman smile.
Renu answers nothing in reply and leaves the room. When adults forget how to behave with a child, then why the innocent souls are blamed for their ‘childish behaviour’?
