We are walking by the lakeside. I don’t remember how long we have been walking like this, holding hands without saying a word to each other. But I am quite enjoying the moment.I am not someone who nurtures a wanderlust, but I am quite enjoying this stroll by a lakeside away from the city. A mild breeze is creating ripples on the lake water and in our hearts.

‘What are you thinking, Danny?’she asks breaking the magic spell of silence.

‘About you,’ I reply.

‘Like what?’ she gives me a mischievous smile and adjusts her engagement ring.

‘That how lucky I am to hold hands of the most beautiful woman I have come across so far,’ I caress her soft hands.

She laughs in response.

‘Oh come on,Jess. You don’t believe my words?’ I stop to look at her pretty face which has turned red partly because of the hues of the setting sun and rest due to my cheesy romance.

‘I believe every word you say,’ Jessica pulls me closer and in seconds our lips start embracing, fondling and exploring each other.’But I didn’t know even the most handsome guy sometimes needs to use his flattery skills,’ she adds after I free her from my grip.

In a way Jessica is right. I never had much difficulty to bed a woman- be it casual dates or one-night stands. After Emily, I was not interested in any serious relationship. Physical intimacy was what I looked forward the most.

It has been almost a year now since Emily and I have parted our ways. After Emily’s sudden departure at the middle of the night, she neither received my phone calls nor she responded to my messages. A day later, I went to her place only to find a locked door. A perplexed me drove to Sarah’s house.

‘Daniel?’ Sarah’s first reaction after she opened the door.

‘Emi….I mean Emily. Do you know where she is?’ I ask her.

‘Why the hell should I care where she is?’ Sarah shouted on top of her voice.

‘What happened?’ I had never felt this confused.

‘What happened?’  There was disgust in her eyes. ‘Didn’t you know my husband and Emily were having an affair? I came to know when I read Logan’s messages by chance. Emily came here on Sunday night and told me that she doesn’t regret having an affair with her best friend’s husband. What a shameless girl ! Even Logan took her side.’

‘Where are they now?’ The only words I could utter after the shocking revelation.

‘I don’t know,’ she gritted her teeth, held her pregnant belly and flinched in pain. I dialled Emily’s number again. She answered the call this time.

‘Emi., where are…’

‘Daniel, first listen to what I am saying. I am in love with Logan,’ she told in one breath even before I could say anything.

‘And what about us?’ my head felt dizzy.

‘There is no us anymore. It’s over….’

‘Come here for a moment, Emily,’ I heard Logan’s voice on the other end.

‘Coming honey,’ she replied Logan. ‘Daniel, I know you are…..’

So Logan was the ‘honey’ after all.I hung up the call. Three days later, Emily sent an envelope with the engagement ring I had given her inside it. The last time I heard about her she was married, not to Logan but to a guy whom I had never heard of before.

It was only after dating Jessica for a while, I realised she was the one. One day, I picked up the telephone and dialled at her desk even though she was sitting in the adjacent cubicle. I was scared to confess my feelings. But Jessica dissolved my fears with her smile and a caring heart.

And here I am, enjoying a beautiful evening with her by this scenic lakeside. I could not have asked for more.
